DIRECTIONS

 

 

Use the information from the approved websites to answer the questions about the respiratory system and respiratory health and wellness.  Type or write all answers on a separate piece of paper.  Five bonus points if you type your answers.

I.                   Respiratory System Anatomy and Physiology

 

  • How does air travel from the nose/mouth to the lungs?  List each structure, in order, that air passes through on its way to the lungs. It may help to look at the diagram and trace the pathway from the mouth to the lungs.
  • Which structures in the respiratory system act to filter or clean the air that we breathe?  Name two of them and explain how they work.
  • Describe the structure of the lungs, include information about the pleura, and the difference between the right and left lungs.
  • Explain how the alveoli work to exchange gases in the lungs.
  • Explain what the diaphragm is and how it works when we breathe.
  • Describe/explain the difference between how humans exchange gases and how one other animal of your choice exchanges gases (fish, worm, bird, grasshopper etc.)

 

 II.                Air Pollution and the Lungs:

 

Use the second website on the list to answer these questions.  Be sure to click on Grades 7-12

 

 

  • Choose two indoor air pollutants from the list.  Write a paragraph for each pollutant, describing what ieach is and how it hurts the body/respiratory system.
  • What are 3 strategies for decreasing one’s exposure to each pollutant?

     

 III.             Respiratory System Diseases

 

Use the same website as above to answer these questions:

 

  • Read about emphysema, chronic bronchitis and lung cancer.  For each disease, explain what it is and what it does to the respiratory system/lungs.
  • Choose one other disease from the list.  Explain what it is and how it affects the respiratory system.

 

 

IV.              Games

 

If you finish early, complete the following.  YOu will receive 5 more bonus points if you include the 10 facts.

 

  • Navigate to the Mad Labs (Games) section of the Grades 7-12 section of the website.
  • Play 3 different games of your choice.  Record 10 facts related to any of the games after you play.
